Beginner Guitar Lesson 8 – 3 String Easy Guitar Chords
We’re going to start with some easy guitar chords today. This is exciting, because chord are what songs are made of, so once you start learning chords songs are just around the corner.
The easy guitar chords we’re going to look at today only require you to play the bottom 3 or 4 strings. We’ll get into playing all 6 strings in the next lesson but for now I want to start you off slow.
If you haven’t watched the previous lesson about how to read guitar tab I suggest you do so now because it will help you understand the chords in the video above and the text below.
Let’s get started
Simple C Chord
e —0—
B —1—
G —0—
D —X—
A —X—
E —X—
So the easy C chord only requires you to use one finger, it should be your first or index finger. Place it on the first fret of the B string and strum the 3 lowest strings.
Simple G Chord
e —3—
B —0—
G —0—
D —X—
A —X—
E —X—
For the easy G chord go ahead using the same finger as above place it on the third fret of the high E string and strum those same lower 3 strings.
D7 Chord
e —2—
B —1—
G —2—
D —0—
A —X—
E —X—
The D7th chord is a bit harder because you must place 3 fingers on the neck at once all in close proximity to each other.
Using your second finger place it on the 2nd fret of the G string, your first finger on the first fret of the B string and your third finger on the 2nd fret of the high E string.
This shape will feel a little uncomfortable at first but practice makes perfect. Stick at it and comfort will come.
Don’t rush into trying to change between these chords yet, take your time and practice first playing them on their own, then switching between the easy C and G chords then try the D7th chord.
If you haven’t done so yet watch the video lesson at the top of the page where I explain how to make the chord shapes and practice them.
