Beginner Guitar Lesson 6 – How to Tune a Guitar & More Notes on the Strings

You don’t always need a tuner to get your strings in tune. All the notes you need to tune each string of your guitar can be found somewhere else on another string. Today’s lesson is going to teach you how to use the knowledge of the guitar string notes from a previous lesson and use that to tune your guitar.

Magic of the 5th Fret

Last lesson we talked about the notes on each string. If you watched the Lesson 5 video you would have seen how when I reached the 5th fret on the E and D strings the note was the same as the string below it.

This is Fret 1
|—————–F-|——————-|—————–G-|——————-|—————–A-| Low E string
|——————-|—————–B-|—————–C-|——————-|—————–D-| A String
|——————-|—————–E-|—————–F-|——————-|—————–G-| D String
|——————-|—————–A-|——————-|—————–B-|——————–| G String
|—————–C-|——————-|—————–D-|——————-|—————–E-| B String
|—————–F-|——————-|—————–G-|——————-|—————–A-| High E String

The graphic above shows the note you would play at the 5th fret on each of the strings except for the G string, on that string it’s the 4th fret. See how that note matches the note of the string below it. Using this technique you can tune a string to the 5th fret of the string above it (outside the exception of the G string where it’s the 4th fret).

The video for this lesson above explains this technique best, you should watch it right now if you haven’t yet.

Practice

Each time you pickup your guitar for the next few days practice checking to ensure it’s in tune. It takes a bit of time to become quick as this technique so the more you practice the better you’ll be. After a few days this will be second nature to you and you’ll be able to hear the changes in pitch easily on the strings.
